About The Guildford Institute

The Guildford Institute has a special place in the heart of the local community. It is a unique venue where people of all ages and backgrounds can get together to learn, explore, create and meet old and new friends.

With a wide range of courses, talks, music recitals, clubs and visits, there are many ways to enjoy what’s on offer. Our Library holds both historical and modern volumes so you can research here or read at home, and we manage one of the most important local history archives in the area with a fascinating collection of photographs, playbills, brochures and leaflets and other important documents.

Our programme of activities is always expanding, so if you feel you could make an addition to the programme, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We offer affordable room hire for external societies and organisations, and our vegetarian restaurant is one of Guildford’s best-kept secrets.

The Guildford Institute is open to everyone and accessible to all: we have a lift and users can access each part of the building without having to use any steps. We also have a wheelchair-accessible toilet on the ground floor.

Come and be a part of our extraordinary community.

New Theatre Studies Course: Antonin Artaud and his Theatre of Cruelty

This course aims to explore the exciting, influential

yet undervalued theatre practitioner Antonin Artaud.

We will look at his teachings, practice and legacy.

Artaud's manifestos as set out in his book The Theatre

and its Double are perhaps more relevant today than

they were when first published in 1938. Artaud's

outpourings could not be realised in his lifetime but

today his anarchical ideas are everywhere! His theories

continue to challenge and fascinate.

Furniture Painting for Improvers Workshop

This two-session workshop is for those who have

attended one of our beginner workshops or have

some prior experience and wish to develop further

skills in painting wooden furniture. In the first session,

students will apply previously-learned skills to

their small piece of furniture or wooden household

item. During the session, we will look at various

techniques, including using single brush strokes to

create decoration. In the second session, students will

continue to create decorative paintings of flowers or

patterns on their items with single brush stroke work.

Students should bring along a small, readily portable

wooden item such as a mirror, stool or chair, small

shelf unit or cabinet to the course. Please note that

the Institute is not able to store these items between

sessions.

Please note: All paint and painting utensils are included

Chakra Meditation Course at the Guildford Institute

In the ancient tradition, chakras are energetic

centres that each work on a specific vibration,

colour, emotion and energetic frequency. Each

week we are going to learn about one chakra,

reveal potential personal blocks and use guided

visualisation to activate, release and upgrade it.

Nadege has been working on removing blocks to

inner fulfilment for over 15 years as a kinesiologist

and trainer, specialising in stress management.

Please wear comfortable clothes, bring a mat

and a blanket.
